Notes on Australia and the transformation of material and image

I don’t struggle to prove that my paintings are abstract. That is a battle that has already been fought and won by such heros as Malevich. I can return abstraction to the natural world, from which it feeds. In my paintings you will find titles such as ‘The Bather’, ‘Angel’, ‘Wall of Light Desert Night’. These titles emphatically testify to the relationship between my work and places and figures in our world. Yet they are abstract in the sense that I can start from my own energy and history, and ‘attach’ the painting as it reveals itself. As it is born and developed it shows itself: what it’s relation is to the world; where it could have come from; and what it’s like.
